Rachel Fletcher, managing partner at Slater Heelis, shares her passions and interests with The Brief
How do you like to start the day?
Early. I’m up and out no later than 6.30 as there aren't enough hours in the day!
What’s your favourite object in your office/home office?
That’s easy – my salt lamp. Not only does it clean the air but I do believe it boosts my mood, and helps me sleep.
Who is your closest colleague?
This is a hard one. I am in touch with all former colleagues and most of my friends are also former colleagues. I couldn’t pick one without upsetting the others so, rather un-lawyer like, I will sit on the fence with this one! What I can say is that I never burn bridges and criminal lawyers have a kind of trauma bond!
Do you have a favourite family heirloom?
I have a porcelain hamster that I bought my late grandad from a 99p shop. Does that count?
What’s your favourite song of all time?
Can I have three? “She Bangs the Drums” by the Stone Roses, “Smooth Criminal” by Michael Jackson and “The Man Who Can’t be Moved” by The Script, although this list would change each time you ask me depending on my mood!
What’s your favourite play?
Who’s your favourite movie star?
Kate Winslet for embracing who she is, physically, and Brad Pitt for embracing who he is physically!
What’s your favourite book?
A classic – Great Expectations.
What book are you reading right now?
The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel van der Kolk – it’s a fascinating read that summarises decades of research on the effects of trauma on the mind, body, and brain. I’d recommend it for anyone interested in understanding and treating traumatic stress and the scope of its impact on society.
What book do you wish you had written?
Bridget Jones’s Diary. I don’t normally do fiction but this never fails to cheer me up.
What’s the greatest invention of all time?
Aeroplanes, as I love to travel and experience other cultures.
Is there a sport you wish you could play?
Nah!
Who inspires you in business?
One of my old bosses. He ran his firm with simple fair principles that I have adopted, and which now hopefully resonate with, and also benefit, my team.
In the office do you dress up, dress down or somewhere in between?
If I had my way, I’d be in a hoodie and leggings everyday but more often than not I’m formal these days.
Where do you go to relax?
To my local reservoir with my dog. I love solo dog walks.
What country have you always wanted to visit?
Canada.
Besides your phone, what do you always have with you?
Cash.
What’s the best part of your job?
Winning.
How do you unwind after work?
It’s not always easy to unwind because working in criminal law can bring challenging cases and all sorts of associated emotions. The best way I find to unwind is to call friends or family, which I do almost every day whilst driving home.
Finally, what’s your guilty pleasure?
Researching a topic to death, I love falling down rabbit holes!
