Self-improvement during the ups and downs of a career in recruitment
Overall, a job in recruitment is a brilliant one, but even for those who love it, there are plenty of ups and downs and although this applies to all jobs, recruitment has an undeniable ‘rollercoaster’ reputation.
The 'ups' and 'downs'
When everything’s going well your clients and candidates are both happy: offers are made and accepted, everything falls into place and all is well with the world.
A good recruitment outcome is the ultimate win/win scenario. You’ve saved a business their valuable time and resource and secured someone their dream job.
Other days are a challenge. Candidates change their mind (there’s nothing wrong with this, everyone’s allowed to change their mind, but communication is key here), businesses retract roles the final interview stage), offers get rejected; you name it, it happens! The perils of the job.
But for me, the good days outweigh the bad.
The bad days put things into perspective: if the job was easy everyone would do it and it wouldn’t have any value.
Recruitment is a great career choice if self-development is important to you
In recruitment, you’re required to overcome adversity. While this might feel uncomfortable or challenging at the time, it does wonders for self-improvement and self-confidence (depending on how you deal with it of course).
How you react to a bad week, month or even months reveals the type of person you are.
“Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it’s the courage to continue that counts.”
I appreciate it’s easier said than done but establishing new thinking habits that encourage you to own the bad days can be life-changing. Most importantly, there are lessons to learn from each bad day; the more difficult the problem, the better the lesson!
As long as you’re doing your best, working hard and being honest, that’s all any good recruitment agency – that values its employees – can expect. Problems will always occur, but a good manager will judge your competency on how you deal with them. And this is certainly the case at BCL.
BCL is a great learning environment where the best platform is given in order to learn and become a better consultant for it.
