The Chartered Institute of Legal Executives
The Chartered Institute of Legal Executives, or CILEx, is the professional association for Chartered Legal Executive lawyers and other members of CILEx.
The CILEx route to qualification is the most affordable and accessible route to qualifying as lawyer. The majority of CILEx members do not have parents who attended university and only 2% of their members have a parent who is a lawyer. CILEx qualifications are open to anyone holding GCSEs, A-Levels or a degree. Studying for CILEx qualifications is relatively inexpensive compared to students leaving University with debts of up to £20-30,000 on average. So if you want to pursue a career in law and avoid student debt then CILEx should be your first choice.
Given the scarcity of training contracts on offer in the market today, CILEx has also developed a programme that can be chosen instead of pursuing the LPC. Tuition fees are therefore considerably less than those charged by GDL or LPC providers.
For Chartered Legal Executives the sky is the limit in terms of career progression. There is the option to become solicitors in one or two years after becoming Chartered and most Legal Executives are usually exempt from having to complete a training contract. Further to this the Legal Services Act 2007 cleared the way for legal executives to become partners in law firms, there are now over 100 Legal Executive partners across the Country and this figure is rising weekly.
