Probationary Review
It's hard to believe I'm already writing my third blog at BCL Legal and preparing for my probation review next week! My first three months have flown by and I have learnt so much about recruitment and the practice areas I cover.
It's also given me the chance to reflect on my first few months back in civilian life. If you don't have family or friends in the military then the armed forces can hold an air of mystery and some people (even some of my previous candidates when I recruited for the Royal Navy!) will admit they know absolutely nothing about how the military operate and what they do on a day to day basis.
I think my first observation would be that it's really not that different out here in civilian world. Previously, at sea, I managed a high volume of work and my days were very long; I spent eight hours per day driving the ship in addition to a large amount of time at my desk conducting administrative tasks that contributed towards maintaining operational capability and achieving the Commanding Officer's aims and objectives. This was lightened with injections of excitement such as a gunnery shoot or successfully detaining a fishing vessel that made it all worthwhile. Now, I happily admit that I can spend a lot of time concentrating on learning the ins and outs of a particular client or searching the 70,000 strong database for the right person to fill a vacancy. Giving each of my clients and candidates the care and attention they deserve is a time consuming task, but it's important to me to do my job well and the excitement I felt today makes it worth every second of concentration (today I had a candidate cry with joy because I secured them their perfect role). The key difference in this is that my objectives contribute towards the successful running of BCL Legal, but ultimately I have the privilege of assisting each of my candidates in their own personal objectives.
I now specialise in personal legal services across Yorkshire and the North East of England. I'm Yorkshire born and bred and my husband hails from the North East, so it's great to be working areas that I have a connection to. I have already met some fantastic clients and candidates who I look forward to working with and I can't wait to grow my network further, so if you are in need of some assistance or even if you just have a few questions you think we can answer, please do get in touch.
