Imagine you are a manager in almost any type of business setting and you are interviewing someone with a view to employing them in your team. What is the one key attribute that you would value above all others?

For solicitors who spend their lives being cautious in the advice they offer (no one wants to get sued), diligent in their research and precise in their approach breaking down the job specification and demonstrating on a point by point basis that you can do the job is often second nature. However, demonstrating that you want the job often appears to be a much harder thing to do.

The reality is that in the age of team work and open plan offices, personality and enthusiasm is an absolutely key ingredient. Your employer has to believe that you are going to be an asset to the team dynamic and someone who is really enthusiastic about what the team is trying to achieve.

So next time you find yourself at an interview remember it’s not just about whether you can do the job – it’s about whether you can demonstrate that you really want to do the job.
