NQ solicitors – where do you see yourself in ten years?
There was a time that the legal career path was quite clearly laid out. Thanks to Ally McBeale, Law and Order and John Grisham it was all very simple – go to university, study law, become a solicitor and keep working until you hit partnership. But has this changed? Recently I have been struck by the number of junior candidates that are trying to work out what their career will look like in 3 years/ 5 years/ 10 years. It can be a daunting proposition.
For newly qualified solicitors it may seem even more daunting – you probably thought that securing your training contract would make everything clearer. But the legal world is changing and there are now so many more options open to candidates. You may wish to look at in-house opportunities upon qualification, or otherwise remain in private practice with the ambition to move to a different environment after a few years. You may see yourself as the next Harvey Specter and already be planning your path to Partnership.
Your career path will change depending upon so many factors. I have worked with several candidates that had made the move out of private practice only to find that they missed being in such a meritocratic environment.
