NQ careers roadshow – Sheffield and Newcastle
What a fantastic couple of months we have had at BCL towers. The NQ roadshow has now come to an end and the Yorkshire and North East legs were both huge successes. First the Sheffield talks took place in the Sky Bar at Revolution in Sheffield - not your conventional conference room - but more of a social space that allowed for meets greets and networking, all over a few drinks at the bar. We were joined by Andrea Cropley, Head of Corporate at Irwin Mitchell, and Suzanne Porter, Private Client partner with Taylor & Emmet as our key speakers for the evening. In Newcastle we were joined by Shirley Hall, Employment Partner at Eversheds and James Muse, Senior Solicitor at Newcastle Building Society. The event was held at Blackfriars in their beautiful Banquet Hall.
Both evenings were fantastic opportunities for 2016 and 2017 qualifiers to come along and understand more about the qualification process, the current NQ market, and what is needed to secure a role post training contract. Our speakers gave detailed talks on their career experiences, and the hurdles they have come across in their careers thus far. Most importantly though, candidates found out first hand what Partners look for when an NQ CV lands on their desk. This is so important – as you really need to be able to stand out from the crowd when there are a bunch of other NQ’s applying for the same roles as you. There are many things to consider – not always just academics and training firm. Your personalities need to come across, but you also need to include as much detail as possible about your training contract as possible – who you have worked with, what files you have worked on, how much responsibility you have been given. There is a lot to think about!
If you missed out on any of our careers talks and would like to have a confidential chat about what to expect on qualification, especially if you are unsure whether or not you have a position available for you come September (or sooner!), then please contact Rozie Hunter at BCL Legal.
