Living the Paralegal Dream
The Paralegal is one of the most indistinct jobs within the legal sector, with no set rules and regulations about what they do! Some paralegals are highly experienced professionals who focus solely on one practice area and who work to the level of trainees. 60 percent of Paralegals surveyed in a recent survey state that at least once they have been given work to do that would usually be completed by a 2PQE Lawyer. Whilst other paralegals provide across the board support completing tasks such as filing, bundles etc.
Regardless of their tasks, the need for Paralegals is definitely on the rise! Law Firms are seeing it as a great pool for their potential trainees, the advantage to which Paralegals wouldn’t just be offered a TC based on their Vacation schemes and assessment centres. It is also an advantage for Paralegals to get a good insight into firms and how they work. There are a large number of firms within London that hire most trainees from among their Paralegals. Trowers & Hamlins recruited 40 per cent of its 2015 trainee intake from their own Paralegal pool and DAC Beachcroft hired 60 per cent. The firm that hired 100% of their trainees through their paralegal pool in 2015 was Roythornes.
However, surprisingly not all Paralegals seek to qualify as a Solicitor and prefer the idea of becoming a career paralegal. A large number of firms within the City also cater for these types of Paralegals and offer very competitive remuneration packages for the types of roles.
If you are a Paralegal who is looking for a position with training contract prospects, a chance to develop in one particular area, long term career opportunities, or you are looking for a shorter assignment before starting your already secured training contract then please do get in touch! I recruit for Paralegals in London across all disciplines and would be delighted to help you find the next step in your career!
