Life always begins with one step outside of your comfort zone
Over the past few weeks, I have been landscaping my very un-landscaped garden, and immediately realised I had bitten off more than I could chew, (David and Goliath was an even fight by comparison). Enthusiasm meant little when faced with the task of breaking and moving 12 tonnes of concrete by hand. Not only did my entire body take the beating of its life, my very soft, office worn hands were unrecognisable. Whilst nursing my wounds, I realised; its one thing recognising you are in your comfort zone, but it’s another getting out of it when it comes to employment.
It’s no secret that there is a real shortage of strong litigation candidates at the moment. This is a constant struggle for my clients and naturally led me to consider why, given the strong position candidates have, are there not more active in the market. One expert is quoted by Fortune stating; “Top candidates now are much more passive or what I would even call lazy.” which tells me that the greater the demand the more passive candidates have become. This seems crazy to me, yes, people check job boards or sign up to recruiter mailers for different reasons but to truly get a grasp of your market value, you need to be speaking to experts like myself.
It doesn’t really matter how long you have been in your present role, the same “what If’s” remain. What if I don’t like it? What if it doesn’t work out? What if I’ve moved for the wrong reason? By letting these what if’s control your decision to actively job search, suggests you are also stuck in your comfort zone. By recognising this and taking a pro-active approach will give you a clear advantage over perhaps stronger but passive candidates.
