Articles From the Team
It’s a marathon, not a sprint…
I read a fantastic article recently about the career advice you wish you had been given at the beginning of your career when you were 25. There are a number of great things listed but the one that struck a chord was that a career needs to be approached on a long term basis. “Things will come if you work hard and allow yourself time to get good at things.” https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/career-advice-i-wish-had-25-shane-rodgers?trk=hp-feed-article-title-like
You can sometimes start your career at the firm that proves to be the best environment for you and you end up staying there long term. Equally you may start your career at a firm that is just the first step in your CV. You may need to make more than one move to get to your dream job. A move may be to gain experience with a better client base resulting in improved quality of work, or step up to a national firm from a smaller regional practice. You may also have started your career where you wanted, but had time out to raise a family. “If you have skills, commitment and passion, careers tend to take care of themselves. Over the long haul, it really doesn’t matter if you have a few years when your career is in canter mode while you prioritise young children.” The solution is to have a plan of your career path in the long term.
It is good to have an idea of where you ultimately see your career going, and we help many lawyers to do just this in the Manchester legal market. In private practice in Manchester, we are lucky to have a range of firms from smaller boutique commercial practices and regional heavyweight firms to the large national firms. Whatever your long term career aspirations, please give me a call to have a confidential chat; I’d would love to help you map out your career path.
