Interview Success lies in…Research, Preparation and Personality!
Well done…you’ve made the decision to secure your next role, spoke to a recruitment consultant, applied for that dream job and secured an interview! That’s half of success done but do not rest assured just yet as you still have to beat off the competition! For those of you who have been settled in the same role for quite some time and unsurprisingly, had little interview practice, start brushing up now!
You may be wondering where to start?! Well, a good place is RESEARCH… make sure you are familiar with the current market trends, the company, the role and the interviewer’s background. All of this will help you articulate a winning answer to an almost guaranteed question of ‘why do you want to work here?’ With the wide array of online sources available to you such as company website and twitter, Legal 500 and Partner & Chambers, there is really very little excuse for falling at the first hurdle.
So you’ve done your company research and are able to confidently discuss current market trends backed up with a formulated opinion on the subject matter, well done you are almost there! On to the next step, PREPARATION…make sure you know your CV “inside out” and are able to discuss your experience and achievements in a coherent and well-structured manner…this is your opportunity to sell yourself so make the most of it! Perhaps, prepare your very own answers to the old time classic interview questions such as ‘what are your strengths/weaknesses/achievements?’ as well a list of your own question avoiding discussing salary at the first meeting!
Lastly but not least importantly, relax and let your PERSONALITY shine through! Remember, companies are not only looking for a strong technical ability but also an outgoing and friendly personality that will be a good fit for their team. So from the moment that you arrive, don’t forget to build rapport with the person interviewing you and ask them a few questions of your own!
Good luck to all going through the interview process! Should you wish to discuss your options, interview success as well as private client roles, be it permanent, interim or locum.
