How to make dreams reality
Big dreams
We all have dreams about what we want our lives to become; to get there, we need targets. Financial targets, performance and development targets, work or project targets… the list goes on.
But how do we reach our targets? How do you know if you’re heading in the right direction? How do you ensure your dreams become a reality?
Most importantly, you have to have a clear focus on what you need to do to reach that target, hit that goal and move closer to your dreams.
What gets measured, gets managed.
- Peter Drucker
The following top tips will help you get closer to your dream life...
1. Write it down
Whatever your dream is, write it down! It will act as your 'why’ guide – giving you a strong purpose, which will serve to keep you motivated.
Research reveals that those who physically make note of their goals are more successful than those who don’t. In one study, students were followed up years after graduation and it was found that those who had written down their goals earned 10 times more than those who didn’t!
2. Break it down
Now you’ve worked out what you’re aiming for, break it down into manageable chunks (a.k.a. targets!). Our dreams can be daunting – breaking them down overcomes this and keeps you edging towards the big one!
3. Take it one step at a time
Each goal needs your undivided attention; try not to have too many things to work on or you’ll become overwhelmed. Sit down and work out what you need to do to achieve your first goal and then DO IT! Complete one at a time and tick them off as you go along.
4. Celebrate your wins
Hitting targets isn’t easy; there will be some that are tougher than others: those that require more focus, determination and perseverance.
When you’ve achieved your goals, don’t immediately jump into ‘what’s next?’ Take a moment to reflect: what went well, what didn’t, what can you do better next time?
5. Review what you’ve written
Don’t just keep trudging forward with your head down. Constantly review your goals and revert to the bigger picture… write these observations in your journal, review it weekly, never lose track of why you’re doing what you’re doing.
6. What if you don’t ‘win’?
Don’t panic!
If your plan doesn’t work, once again, stop and reflect on your purpose (your why and your dream), then work out the best way forward!
Ask for help if you need it, don’t suffer in silence. It’s 100% not a sign of weakness; it’s a sign of strength and determination. Sometimes we just can’t see the way forward and need someone to help give us a nudge in the right direction!
Success isn’t final, failure isn’t fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts
– Winston Churchill
Whatever you do, don’t give up!! Your goal may be big and
daunting but with the right attitude, determination and drive, I truly believe
anything is possible. You just have to keep going!
Good luck reaching your dreams.
