Happy New Year – Happy New Career
It’s the last week of December and the end of the working year is fast approaching. With a mixture of excitement for the year to come (and Christmas of course) and reflection on the year just past. It seems to be that after the festive season we find a surge in candidates seeking new positions and I had to wonder, why is this?
In the run up to Christmas, predominantly during the month of December, things tend to slow down a bit in the world of legal recruitment. Candidates are busy finalising work before the Christmas break and clients are equally busy finding it difficult to squeeze in time for interviews given that December tends to be a three week working month with a lot of firms closing for the Christmas break. That coupled with an inordinate amount of Christmas parties and the obligatory jaunts to the German market means that we have a seemingly lighter work load over the festive period. This shouldn’t be too surprising come to think of it.
Come the new year we will all return to work after having had just over a week off. We start to make the usual resolutions; actually going to the gym rather than just paying for a membership, sticking to the diet, planning more holidays etc. It also tends to be the time of year when we start thinking of new ventures and in many cases a new job.
For recruiting partners things start at a pace in January; some budget discussions begin, new ideas for team expansion and firm growth come about and inevitably this leads to new vacancies. Tie this in with the fact that candidates are on the search and all of a sudden the market is moving again.
Christmas can be a time of reflection, a time that we spend time our families and loves ones. Many of us (generally speaking) tend to use this time to evaluate what is truly important to us. There are many factors to consider; money, career progression, environment and culture, quality of work etc. It may be that you just want to see what is on the market and see if there is something that catches your eye and sparks your intrigue. Or there could be the realisation that you are not happy in your job and cannot contemplate another year of the same.
