Green shoots from the City and beyond
As reported in the London Evening Standard by Jamie Dunkley this week the Square Mile will create 41,000 new jobs over the next decade; London truly is in a state of recovery and it is clear to see from all corners of the City.
If I stand at either end of the road where our London office is based, New Broad Street, I see a landscape dominated by cranes and building work, more office space being created to house the professionals to be based in the growing City.
As reported by Dunkley the number of available jobs in the City increased by 24.3% between 2009-2013, compared with only 2.3% overall across the UK. Some 435,000 workers are now employed in the area, equivalent to 18% of all jobs in Central London; it’s no wonder there are so many new offices being built.
The message is similarly positive from the legal sector; The Lawyer this week reported that the UK’s top 20 firms by revenue are gearing up for the recovery, with most expecting to see a turnover increase of at least 5 per cent for the year ending April 2014. It was further reported that whilst 2013/14 has been a busy year it has been unexceptional in which the commercial pressures on the UK’s largest firms continued to be felt.
In the last year BCL Legal has extended its offering by opening its London office in the City. It was recently reported that BCL Legal saw a 44% rise in candidate placements in January to March 2014 compared to the same period in 2013, in fact we placed more candidates in this period than we have ever done before in a three month period.
