Don’t take your foot off the gas!
We live in a fast paced world, where if you don’t keep up or work hard enough, quite simply you’ll be left well and truly behind!
In my past life as a family solicitor, I was on a mission to ensure that every client I represented received justice, I had to work very hard and power through each and every case! I would build cases from very little to what would then culminate into what can only be described as an epic outcome at court. This was not done without weeks and months of sifting through mountains of paperwork, speaking to experts, liaising with opponents, applying the law and then finally achieving a win! I enjoyed my years as a solicitor but it was time to move on.
After much deliberation, I decided to hang up my solicitor cloak and turn my hand to legal recruitment. A freak choice some might say but now almost two years into my role, with lots of blood, sweat and tears poured in, I can positively say that I wonder why I had not done this sooner.
Contrary to public belief, recruitment is in fact tough and challenging. I spent many months working long hours to make sure I fully understood and grasped the workings of legal recruitment. Twenty months into this job, I have seen the rewards and fruition of my efforts; great bonuses, impressive treats from my Directors, promotion, pay rise and a job I thoroughly enjoy.
None of this has happened without a lot of hard work from me and credit where credit is due, my managers who patiently aided and supported my journey. They pushed me when I had no more to give. Why did they do that? They knew, even when I couldn’t see it, that their little push would yield massive rewards for me and I’m pleased to say they were right.
I am now at a point in my role, where I’m comfortable, I know my clients, I understand my market and I know how to provide commercial success for the business and myself. It’s easy to become complacent whilst basking in the glory of all your hard work and effort and before you know it you have taken your foot off the gas! Naturally this will bear consequence, and I’ll put this in recruiter terms, this could result in less contact with candidates, less CVs being sent, less interviews secured and eventually no placements. All of which could prove to be the sad demise of a successful recruiter.
It’s important to remind yourself of taking things back to basics now and then and find that momentum, drive and motivation which helped you achieve success in the first place. With this in mind, my foot is to the floor in hope that I can continue to have a very long and successful career here at BCL Legal.
