Should I accept a job offer right away?
I'm asked this question a lot. It's an exciting time and a huge relief to receive a job offer, isn’t it? So why would someone go through the lengthy process of tailoring their CV and attend multiple interviews only to reject it?
Each firm has weighed you up against multiple candidates so why shouldn't you do the same? Accepting a job offer isn't a 'yeah, I guess so' kind of yes, it's a yes that signifies a new chapter in your career (and life) and making the move can be as daunting as your first day at a new school.
All firms vary in terms of environment and personality, but the one thing we forget at interview is that process differs too. For example, if you’re interviewing at multiple firms: Firm A’s process might be quicker than Firm B’s, so an offer may come sooner, but that doesn’t mean you won’t get an offer from Firm B does it?
Firm B might be a better fit and tick more boxes, but if you’re impatient, you might be left with two offers, which is great, but also uncomfortable. No one wants to let anyone down, including yourself!
Here at BCL Legal, we work closely with both employer and candidate. We focus on relationships - we value people so we provide an open and honest viewpoint to help take the worries away from you. We ensure everyone's on the same page, so that when you're making such an important decision you don't have to feel pressured to say yes.
So, the answer is no. You don’t have to accept a job offer right away. If a firm likes you enough to make an offer, they should be more than happy to give you the opportunity to deliberate. Don’t forget, options are good, that’s why you applied for more than one job in the first place!
