A recent survey of lawyers made bleak reading for women in the profession... The picture however is much brighter if you are working in-house.
According to the Innovation in Law survey, carried out by IPSOS Mori an overwhelming majority of lawyers believe the profession is dominated by middle class men. Furthermore, they felt that developing a career in law as a mother is difficult.
This survey was commissioned by law firm Hodge Jones Allen and surveyed private practice lawyers. Thank goodness from where we are sitting the situation is wholly different for in-house lawyers. When looking at the 132 assignments completed by the BCL Legal in-house legal recruitment team in 2014 (to date) a massive 67% of those recruited were female!
Clients from a range of sectors have recruited females and many were into senior positions. Examples include Lafarge Tarmac, Assurant, BUPA, Boohoo.com, Rolls Royce, National Grid to name a few.
There are many reasons why the numbers and sentiment is so different when comparing private practice to in-house but that is a whole other blog! For now the evidence shows that it is not the women that should be worried....
